INTASC Principle #6 - Assessment
The teacher understands and uses multiple methods of assessment to engage learners in their own growth, to monitor learner progress, and to guide the teacher's and learner's decision making.
I pride myself in my ability to provide a variety of assessments that allow all students to succeed and demonstrate their strengths. During the unit I created on American Symbols I assessed students using rubrics for group work and presentations. I had students take a short exam which included a short writing prompt and vocabulary matching. Students were also asked to create two art projects (a hanging mobile and a quilt square). Finally, while students worked in their Literature Circles, I asked them to self assess and discuss their group's strengths and weaknesses. During my second student teaching placement, I continued to apply these varied assessment strategies. In addition, I used TurningPoint software which allowed students to receive immediate feedback. Finally, to improve fact fluency, I had students record their completion results on a bar graph for the marking period. These graphs were hung in the room and were clearly visible to the students.
